Starting With Photos of the Existing Opening
Before the site visit, Amanda sent photographs showing both sides of the opening, the raised floor transition and the surrounding basement.
She also sent a photograph of another door in the home. She wanted the new door to match its simple one-panel design and brushed-nickel lever handle as closely as possible.
These early photographs were useful, but the irregular shape of the opening needed to be measured in person before the door could be selected and prepared.

An Opening With No Standard Reference Point

The raised carpeted threshold also had to be considered. A door fitted only according to the height at one side could easily rub against the raised section or leave an excessive gap elsewhere.
Trying to force a standard pre-sized door into this opening would not have produced a clean or reliable result. The new slab needed to be fitted to the actual shape of the existing frame.

Fitting the Door to the Existing Frame

A door shaped for an uneven opening cannot simply follow every irregular line around it. It still needs to hang correctly, maintain practical reveal lines and close without binding. The fitting process is a balance between the condition of the existing structure and the way the finished door needs to operate.

Matching the Existing Basement Doors
Function was only part of the request. Amanda also wanted the new door to look as though it belonged in the basement.
The one-panel profile coordinates with the reference door she showed me, while the brushed-nickel lever keeps the hardware consistent. Once installed, the new door gave the opening a clear purpose without looking unrelated to the rest of the home.
Most importantly, it opens, closes and latches properly despite the uneven frame and changing floor height beneath it.
