Double Doors, Transom and Sidelights for a Vaughan Home Office

Some home office openings need more than a standard pair of doors.

David’s Vaughan home already had a wide interior archway opening. The opening gave the room a nice sense of height and connection to the rest of the home, but it did not provide the privacy and separation needed for a proper home office.

Wood Job Finish Carpentry was brought in to create a custom interior door solution inside the existing opening: double doors in the centre, a custom transom above, and fixed sidelights on both sides.

The goal was to separate the home office from the surrounding living space without making the room feel dark, closed off, or disconnected from the rest of the home.

A Custom Door Solution Inside an Existing Archway

This project was not a simple door installation.

The home already had an archway-style opening, and the surrounding opening was already finished. The challenge was to build a clean, custom door system inside that existing space.

Standard double doors alone would not have filled the opening properly. The opening was too wide and tall for a basic double-door setup to look balanced.

The final solution included:

  • A custom transom above the doors
  • Fixed sidelights on the left and right
  • Double doors in the centre
  • Clear panels for light and visibility
  • Custom framing inside the existing opening
  • Careful alignment between the doors, sidelights and transom

This kind of project requires planning because the entire system has to read as one clean architectural feature.

The doors, transom, sidelights, panel lines, hardware, gaps, and reveals all need to work together.

Double Doors in the Centre

The centre of the opening was fitted with double interior doors.

Double doors are a good choice for home offices because they create a proper entrance and make the room feel more intentional. They also provide flexibility: both doors can open when needed, or the room can stay closed for privacy during work calls, meetings, reading, or quiet time.

For this Vaughan project, the doors had to work within the existing archway opening while aligning cleanly with the transom and sidelights.

The centre meeting line, hinge placement, hardware height, door gaps, and reveal lines were all important to the final result.

Transom Above for Height and Light

The upper part of the opening was completed with a custom transom.

A transom was the right solution because the existing opening had enough height to support a fixed upper section. Instead of making the doors oversized or leaving the top of the opening unfinished, the transom allowed the full system to feel balanced.

The transom also helped keep light moving through the space, so the home office could feel more private without feeling closed in.

Sidelights on Both Sides

Because the opening was wider than the double doors alone, fixed sidelights were added on both sides.

The sidelights helped fill the width of the opening in a clean and balanced way. They also kept the room visually open, which was important for this project.

Without sidelights, the door system would have felt too narrow for the existing opening. With sidelights, the full installation looked more intentional and better proportioned.

Clear Panels for a Bright Home Office

David wanted clear panels for light and visibility.

This choice helped preserve the open feeling of the original archway while still creating a more functional office space. The room can now be separated when needed, but it still feels connected to the rest of the home.

Clear panels are a good option when homeowners want privacy and separation without losing natural light or visual openness.

Custom Framing Inside the Existing Opening

Since the archway opening was already there, the project required custom framing inside the opening rather than new exterior casing around it.

The work had to fit the existing space, align with the doors, support the sidelights and transom, and create a clean finished system within the original opening.

This is where careful finish carpentry matters. The entire system depends on accurate measuring, straight lines, consistent reveals, and clean alignment.

If the sidelights are not even, the full opening looks off.
If the transom is not proportioned properly, the top section feels awkward.
If the centre gap between the doors is uneven, the doors draw attention for the wrong reason.
If the frame does not sit cleanly inside the existing opening, the project feels forced.

For David’s home office, the goal was to make the door system feel like a natural part of the home — not an afterthought.

David’s Review

After the project was completed, David left a 5-star Google review:

“Excellent workmanship from Jack and team. Very professional, clean, and true craftsmen. Jack worked to create this solution which has resulted in this beautiful creation. We are so pleased with the result, and would not hesitate to recommend or hire this team in future.”

That review means a lot because it describes exactly what we try to bring to custom finish carpentry work: clean installation, professional communication, thoughtful problem-solving, and craftsmanship that feels personal to the home.

A Home Office That Feels Private, Bright and Finished

Once completed, David’s Vaughan home office felt more defined without losing the light and openness of the original archway.

The double doors provide privacy.
The transom keeps the height and brightness.
The sidelights balance the width of the opening.
The clear panels maintain visual connection.
The custom frame makes the full system feel complete.

This is the kind of project where finish carpentry makes a daily difference. The room becomes more useful, more private, and more polished, while still feeling connected to the rest of the home.

Cenk from Wood Job did an excellent job! He installed 4 doors, trims and baseboards with great attention to detail. Very clean, fast, and professional work. His price was about 25% lower than the other two quotes I received, and the quality was even better. Excellent price-to-performance — highly recommended!

Jack did an excellent job installing and finishing our basement doors. The quality of his workmanship was great, and he was professional, efficient, and paid close attention to the details to make sure everything looked perfect. He even cleaned everything up as he found it after. It’s hard to find reliable tradespeople who take pride in their work, but Jack went above and beyond and delivered exactly what we were looking for. If you’re in Burlington and need door installation or finishing work done, I’d highly recommend Jack for the job.

We live in Mississauga and renovated our kitchen some years ago. We installed the backsplash on our own, and of course the finish wasn’t as clean as it supposed to be. Regretted it but also didn’t want to take off and re-do the entire backsplash. We reached out to Jack to replace the window casing, and so glad we did. Even though it was a relatively small project, he responded quickly, gave us a fair quote, and did an excellent job on time. His workmanship was clean, precise, and made a huge difference to the overall look of our kitchen. Highly recommend Wood Job Finish Carpentry to anyone looking for a reliable, skilled, and reasonably priced carpenter 😃👍

100% recommended! Jack is a gem! He has just completed a double door installation which is quite a small job for him but this is not the first one he has done for me, and once again I’m very happy with the quality of his work. He is professional, detail-oriented, and takes pride in making sure everything is done properly. What I appreciate the most, and this is VERY important, is his willingness to find solutions when unexpected situations come up during the project. He is reliable, respectful, and easy to work with. I’m delighted with the final result and can say no more than good words on his work!
