While completing other custom work for a customer in Mississauga, I was asked if I could also build a series of raised wooden planter boxes for the front of the property.
Six boxes were needed in total. They would run along the edge of the lawn beside the sidewalk, helping organize the landscaping while adding a warmer natural material to the modern exterior of the building.
This was another request that did not come from a standard service list. The customer had a clear practical need and asked whether I could build it.

Planning the First Planter Box
The project began by laying out the long pressure-treated timbers along the front lawn.
Before assembling the boxes, I needed to establish their approximate length, position and relationship with the sidewalk, driveway, front entrances and the other planter locations.
The property has strong horizontal and vertical lines across the garage doors, exterior cladding and columns. The planter boxes needed to feel substantial enough for that architecture without overwhelming the narrow strip of lawn.
Starting with the first long pieces also made it possible to judge the overall scale on site before committing to the full assembly.
Building with Pressure-Treated Lumber
I built the raised planter boxes using heavy pressure-treated 4×4 lumber.
This material gave the boxes enough visual and physical weight for an exposed outdoor location. The stacked horizontal courses also suited the clean, modern lines of the building behind them.
The corners were assembled with an overlapping layout rather than lining every joint up vertically. Staggering the connections helped tie the courses together and created a more deliberate corner detail.
The first completed box established the construction method, height and proportions that would be repeated across the remaining units.
Although the basic form was rectangular, each piece still needed to be cut accurately. A small difference at one corner would become more visible as additional courses were stacked above it.
Building and Positioning Four Planter Boxes
Once the first planter box was complete, I built the remaining three using the same material and corner detail.
The four boxes were positioned at different points along the front of the development. Their locations responded to the entrances, driveway openings and available planting areas rather than forming one continuous wall.
A strip of white landscaping stone was installed around their bases, visually separating the wood from the surrounding grass and sidewalk. It also helped connect the four individual boxes as one coordinated landscape feature.
The spacing was important. Placed too close together, the boxes would have felt heavy along the sidewalk. Too far apart, and they would have looked like unrelated objects. The finished arrangement allowed each box to stand independently while still belonging to the same design.
Sanding the Planter Boxes for Exterior Stain
Pressure-treated lumber is appropriate for exterior work, but newly assembled timbers can still have rough areas, saw marks, raised grain and uneven edges.
After construction, I sanded the visible surfaces and corners of all four planter boxes.
The objective was not to make outdoor lumber look like interior furniture. It was to remove the roughest texture, soften sharp handling edges and prepare the visible surfaces for a cleaner exterior stain finish.
The sanding also brought more consistency to the stacked courses. Once the wood was cleaned and prepared, the boxes were ready for the next finishing stage.
The exterior stain was a later part of the landscaping finish. These photos show the planter boxes built, positioned, filled and sanded in preparation for that coating.
Why These Are Raised Planter Boxes
These structures could also be called raised garden beds, but raised planter boxes is the better description for this particular project.
They were designed as permanent landscape features at the front of the property rather than simply as vegetable-growing beds. Their proportions, placement and material were chosen to contribute to the appearance of the building as well as provide contained planting areas.
Unlike a portable planter, these boxes are open at the bottom. Soil is placed inside the timber perimeter, allowing the planting area to connect with the ground below.
That open-bottom construction also distinguishes them from smaller freestanding flower boxes or decorative planters with built-in floors.
Custom Carpentry Does Not Always Happen Indoors
Most Wood Job projects involve interior doors, casing, baseboards, wall details and other finish carpentry inside the home.
But carpentry is also about finding practical ways to build what a customer needs.
For these planter boxes, the work involved:

- Measuring and cutting heavy exterior lumber

The finished result came from a straightforward material used with careful proportions and consistent assembly.
